Atlanta, Georgia Community Redevelopment - A National Model for Community Redevelopment - East Lake has been recognized by the Urban Land Institute as a national model for community redevelopment. The new East Lake includes: The Villages of East Lake, a mixed-income apartment community with half market-rate and half government-subsidized apartment homes and on-site resident programs managed by Mercy Housing; Charles R. Drew Charter School, the city of Atlanta’s first public charter school, which is managed by Edison Schools, Inc., now serving grades K-8 and offering a comprehensive curriculum and before and after school programs emphasizing high achievement and character development; the East Lake Family YMCA located adjacent to the school; the Sheltering Arms Early Education and Family Center for children from birth to kindergarten; and the Charlie Yates Golf Course, a public, mid-length, 18-hole golf course, that is the home of The First Tee?of East Lake, a year-round golf and mentoring program for area youth. Net proceeds from the Charlie Yates Golf Course, the East Lake Golf Club and the PGA Tour’s season-ending TOUR Championship held at East Lake Golf Club every year benefit East Lake community programs. TOUR Championship tickets are available online. As beautiful as the buildings are, it’s what happening inside them that is making all the difference. With adult residents taking advantage of career development, job and life skills training and financial literacy classes and East Lake youth being offered strong educational support from pre-school to high school, the East Lake community is thriving.

Tee Sign Each year, The First Tee® of East Lake teaches more than 800 young people the life-enhancing values that are inherent to the game of golf.

Consider naming a tee sign at the Charlie Yates Golf Course after one of The First Tee's Nine Core Values:

  • To honor a loved one’s interest in golf, education, and/or improving the lives of young people. 
  • To recognize the difference someone makes in your life and in the lives of others.
  • To demonstrate your commitment to East Lake.

Your tax-deductible gift of $15,000 (payable over three years) will benefit the East Lake Foundation to support The First Tee of East Lake and other educational programs at the Charles R. Drew Charter School.

The First Tee’s Nine Core Values are:

  1. Honesty - Golf is unique from other sports in that players regularly call penalties on themselves.

  2. Integrity - You are responsible for your actions and personal conduct on the golf course.

  3. Sportsmanship - You must know and abide by the rules of golf and be able to conduct yourself in a respectful manner. 

  4. Respect - It is important to show respect for yourself, your partners and opponents and the golf course.

  5. Confidence - Confidence plays a key role in your level of play. You must have confidence in your abilities every time you play.

  6. Responsibility - It is up to you to keep score, repair divots, rake bunkers, repair ball marks and keep up with the pace of play.

  7. Perseverance - To succeed in golf, you must learn to persevere through bad breaks and mistakes.

  8. Courtesy - Begin and end with a handshake with fellow competitors. Show courtesy by remaining still and quiet while others prepare and execute a shot.

  9. Judgment - Using good judgment is critical when deciding on club selection, shot selection, and when to play safe or take a chance.
