What started as a simple gesture by a PGA Tour player wanting to support the work of the East Lake Foundation has turned into a movement … and we want you to join in.
Prior to the 2014 TOUR Championship, PGA TOUR player Brendon Todd visited Drew Charter School and asked how he could help the work of the East Lake Foundation. That week, he pledged $500 per birdie he made in the tournament to the Foundation. In addition, he donated thousands of dollars worth of golf equipment to the First Tee of East Lake and Birdies for East Lake was born.
In subsequent years, PGA TOUR members J.B. Holmes, Brandt Snedeker and Charley Hoffmann partnered with a few East Lake Foundation board members during tournament week to raise awareness of the mission of the Foundation and generate funds vital to the work they do in the Atlanta Community.
Since its inception, Birdies for East Lake has raised more than $450,000 to support the work of the East Lake Foundation! In addition, it has generated regional and national media attention, bringing awareness to the Foundation’s vital work to break the cycle of poverty in Atlanta.
Beginning with the 2017 tournament, we want to give our members a chance to become involved in Birdies for East Lake. The process is simple, we are asking members to select one member of the elite field of 30 golfers participating in this year’s TOUR Championship and make a pledge per birdie to the East Lake Foundation. Suggested pledge is $500 – $1,000 per birdie (for reference, in 2016, players ranged from seven to 14 birdies for the week).
A running total will be kept on the social pages of the East Lake Foundation and shared with media throughout the event.
To participate in Birdies for East Lake, please email Aaron James with the player you choose and the amount your organization would like to pledge per birdie. The final field will be set on Sunday, September 17. If the player you choose doesn’t make the final event field, we will email you with additional player options. Our goal is to have all 30 players “sponsored” by at least one member.
Thank you for your support of the East Lake Foundation. Your membership and support of “Golf with a Purpose” is having an impact on the Atlanta community and in the lives of East Lake’s kids, kids who are breaking the cycle of poverty and now have the opportunity to change the world for generations to come.
