Our beloved founder, Tom Cousins, passed away at the age of 93.
Tom was a visionary leader who dedicated his life to transforming communities and creating opportunities for children and their families to prosper. In 1995, he founded the East Lake Foundation, which serves as the East Lake community’s trustee, ensuring that families living in the Villages of East Lake and children attending Charles R. Drew Charter School and our early learning centers have access to the tools and resources needed to succeed. Tom led with his heart, and his values are demonstrated in our service work every day.
His legacy is one of profound impact, measured not only by the buildings and programs he helped create but, most importantly, by the countless lives he touched. His unwavering commitment to our mission and his deep belief in the potential of others served as an example to everyone that transformative change can only happen if you lead with integrity, professionalism and compassion.
Alongside Eva Davis, Renee Lewis Glover and Shirley Franklin, Tom cultivated a resident-centered approach that remains the cornerstone of our work today. Their groundbreaking collaboration demonstrated the unique power of a public-private partnership, proving that bringing together diverse stakeholders can create sustainable, positive change. Tom’s impact led to the founding of Purpose Built Communities, whose mission is to support and create pathways to prosperity in neighborhoods like East Lake across the country.
“We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our founder, Tom Cousins,” said Ilham Askia, president and CEO of the East Lake Foundation. “Throughout his life, Mr. Cousins remained focused on improving communities around him, and East Lake is a testament to his dedication. Without his vision to ignite change from the inside out, we would not be where we are today as the East Lake Foundation or the East Lake neighborhood as a whole. We extend our sincere condolences to the entire Cousins family, and together, we will carry on his legacy to continue creating purposeful, innovative change in our community.”
We are profoundly grateful for Tom’s leadership, generosity and friendship. The East Lake Foundation and the greater Atlanta community have lost a true champion. We will honor his memory by continuing to work tirelessly to fulfill his dream of a world where every person has the resources and opportunities needed to thrive.
Our thoughts are with Ann Cousins, Lillian and Greg Giornelli, Grady Cousins and Rachel Garceau, and the entire Cousins family during this difficult time.
