Mutual of America announced today that the Revitalization of the East Lake Community program was named an Honorable Mention recipient in the 2014 Community Partnership Award competition.
Nineteen years ago, the East Lake community of Atlanta was home to the notorious East Lake Meadows public housing project. Local developer and philanthropist Tom Cousins recognized that by investing comprehensively in a geographically defined neighborhood, it could be transformed into a viable, vibrant community.
The East Lake Foundation, working with residents and public and private partners, tackles community issues by focusing on mixed-income housing, cradle-to-college education and community wellness. Today, the Villages of East Lake is a mixed-income community of working families whose children excel in the classroom. Violent crime is down 90% and employment levels have skyrocketed to 70%.
